At the community consultation meeting Monday, 16 January 2017, we learned from a heritage planner that the city had initiated the process to have 698 Spadina Avenue designated.

At the above meeting, Ten Editions Bookstore building at the corner of Sussex and Spadina received unanimous approval for heritage designation from the Toronto Heritage Preservation Board on Jan. 26, 2017. This initiative will be considered next by Toronto and East York Community Council, then City Council. More details about heritage designation may be found here.

The next step was February 22, 2017, when Toronto & East York Community Council scheduled to meet concerning the heritage designation decision made at the Toronto Preservation Board meeting.

Everyone is encouraged to both submit letters and attend meetings. Anyone is allowed to attend the Community Council meetings: to speak, one has to register with the city clerk's office before the meeting.

This item was considered by the Toronto and East York Community Council on February 22, 2017 and adopted without amendment. It was considered by City Council on March 9, 2017.

UPDATES REGARDING THE LAST MEETING:
Notice of Ontario Municipal Board Prehearing Conference
On Friday, December 22, 2017, HVRA was sent updated plans for the University’s proposed Sussex-Spadina residence. They formed the basis of the OMB prehearing held January 3, 2018.
Residents were welcome to sign up to be engaged in the hearings, either as parties (who can cross-examine and put evidence before the board, but must attend all hearings) or as participants (with the right to present their personal opinions on the matter should there be a full hearing).

April 2018:
As a result of Bill 139, Building Better Communities and Conserving Watersheds Act, 2017, the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) became the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal (LPAT).
These changes came into effect on April 3, 2018, as specified by proclamation.
